Car learner’s permit
Driver’s permit practice tests by state
The written permit test, often called the DMV knowledge test, checks that you know your state’s traffic laws, road signs and safe driving practices before you drive with a learner’s permit. Each state writes its own driver handbook and sets its own test format, so a good practice test has to follow your state’s handbook, not a generic one.
How our state permit tests work
- Every question is written from your state’s current driver handbook and shows the handbook page in the explanation.
- The number of questions and the passing score are shown only when we can link your state’s official source.
- State pages go live one at a time, only after every question passes our checks.
State pages are in preparation. Until yours is ready, download the driver handbook from your state’s motor vehicle
agency website and study it section by section. Our study guides explain how.
What the permit test usually covers
Driver handbooks generally cover licensing rules, traffic signs and signals, right-of-way, speed limits, safe following and passing, sharing the road, and impaired driving. The exact rules and numbers differ by state, which is why every answer on this site points to your own state’s handbook.
