Signs, signals and markings

Road sign practice

Road signs appear on every permit test and on the CDL General Knowledge test. In the United States, sign shapes, colors and meanings follow a national standard, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), published by the Federal Highway Administration (mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov). State driver handbooks explain the signs you are expected to know.

How to study road signs

  • Learn the meaning of each sign shape and color first; it lets you read a sign before you can see its words.
  • Group signs by type: regulatory, warning, and guide signs.
  • Check your state handbook’s sign pages, since that is what your test is based on.
Sign practice questions are in preparation. Each one will show the sign, a plain explanation and the handbook or MUTCD reference.
